Professor Ching-Min Hsu of the Department of Mechanical Design Engineering at National Formosa University has launched an industry-academia collaboration with Siemens Software Industry Software Taiwan Co., Ltd. and its partner, Chao Shui Technology. This collaborative project introduces the educational edition of Simcenter™  STAR-CCM+ ™ , a high-performance multiphysics computational fluid dynamics simulation software, integrating Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) with machine learning to investigate, through numerical simulation, the effects of different intake geometry parameters on flow velocity distribution, pressure loss, turbulence intensity, and in-cylinder flow characteristics.
The study will establish a three-dimensional intake model and utilize CFD  technology to simulate the intake process, evaluating the effects of different intake shapes, bending angles, cross-sectional variations, and intake flow-guiding designs on engine performance. The study will also analyze the effects of the intake design on the formation of in-cylinder Tumble and Swirl, with the goal of improving combustion efficiency and volumetric efficiency. Through parametric design and flow-field analysis, the research aims to identify an optimized intake design that achieves low pressure loss, high intake efficiency, and good flow-field uniformity, providing a reference for subsequent engine performance enhancement and the development of energy-saving and carbon-reduction technologies.
Daniel Lin, Chairman of Siemens Software Industry Software Taiwan Co., Ltd., stated: "Talent is the fundamental driving force behind the continuous evolution of technology and industry, and Siemens' engineering simulation software serves as an ideal engine for enhancing the international competitiveness of talent and driving innovation. This industry-academia collaboration not only introduces the most advanced simulation and digital twin technologies to academia, but also aims to cultivate talent in depth, driving Taiwan toward continued breakthroughs in high-efficiency engine intake design and advanced simulation technologies while accelerating integration with international standards."
Wei-Hua Lan, General Manager of Chao Shui Technology, stated: "Chao Shui Technology has been dedicated to promoting Siemens Simcenter™ STAR-CCM+™ multiphysics simulation tools and CFD/CAE engineering analysis software for more than 15 years, and we understand that the cultivation of engineering talent must begin in academia. Through this industry-academia collaboration with Siemens Software Industry Software Taiwan and the Department of Mechanical Design Engineering at National Formosa University, students can directly connect theoretical knowledge with actual engineering processes. Through collaboration with the university, we hope to help students develop the simulation capabilities required by industry at an earlier stage and establish a stronger foundation for cultivating engineering R&D talent in Taiwan."
